Chow's Challenge - Glider's Invitational - WOGA Classic

So this update is going to encompass the past 3 weeks -- 3 meets (2 of which were travel meets)!

CHOW'S CHALLENGE - GALVESTON, TX
January 31 took Sophia and mom down to Galveston, TX for the Chow's Challenge! This meet was in the Galveston Convention Center -- right across the street from the ocean!!  The first event of the day was beam.  Sophia had a decent beam routine -- missed her back handspring/back handspring connection and had a few wobbles - received 8.750 and placed 8th. Next event -- floor.  Sophia did a solid floor routine -- 9.550 for a 3rd place medal.  Vault, vault, vault!!  Why must you torment Sophia??  She did a few good warm up vaults and when she did her vault, she landed with her chest too low and fell forward to her hands.  Her coach and her opted for her to do a second vault -- this one was not very good.  She didn't flip off the table and ended up with a 5.350 score (start value dropped to 7.0 without the flip) -- let's just say she was not happy with this!!  Fortunately, she was able to overcome her disappointment and went up to bars next!!  She did an amazing bar routine and scored 9.450 for a 1st place finish!!  Her all-around score was 33.100 -- not her worst score though! Everyone who competed placed in the all-around, so Sophia placed 11th in the senior age group!!  We did get to hang out on the beach and take a bunch of pics after the meet!!  Enjoy!!

GLIDER'S INVITATIONAL - ONTARIO, CA
February 7 took Sophia and mom to Ontario, California for the Glider's Invitational!!  Since we were flying to Cali, we spent a few nights there! Such a beautiful area to have a meet!!  The meet was held at the Ontario Convention Center (and we stayed in a hotel right across the street -- super convenient)!  The first event of the meet for Sophia was bars.  Sophia did a great bar routine (might have missed hitting her handstands) and got 9.150 -- she didn't place in this -- oh well!  Next event, beam -- the beam has been a bit of her nemesis since her concussion but this meet she pulled of a good routine and scored 9.025 and a 4th place medal.  Up next, floor!  Sophia, as usual, performed a beautiful floor routine and scored 9.450 for a 4th place medal.  Final event, vault! SOPHIA FLIPPED HER VAULT!!  Well, the first vault she ended up on hands and knees!  Her and Ned (her vault coach) opted to have her do a 2nd vault -- and this one she landed on her feet with a small step back on her landing.  She scored 9.000 and placed 6th in her age group.  This meet's all-around score was 36.625 with a 3rd place medal in the 13 year old age group!!  Super happy with her overall performance in this meet!!  We spent the rest of the day with friends exploring Huntington Beach and Downtown Disney.  Enjoy the pic collage!!!

WOGA CLASSIC - FRISCO, TX
Today, Sophia competed at the WOGA Classic.  Her session was held in the Dr. Pepper Arena -- which happens to be the practice facility for the Dallas Stars (NHL) and the home of the Texas Legends basketball team.  The set up for this meet was different than any meet Sophia has competed at -- it is an ice hockey arena with seating for up to 6,000 people!!  The competition floor was set up over the hockey rink -- which made for a chilly meet!!  Sophia's first event of the day was floor.  She did a nice looking floor routine (did a tuck instead of a pike on her first tumbling pass and had a few step outs on her landings) and got 9.350 for 4th place medal.  Second event - vault!!  She landed her first vault on her feet and scored 9.050 -- no 2nd vault today -- she did not place! Next up, bars -- Sophia did a great looking bar routine for a 9.250 and 4th place medal.  Final event was beam.  She was doing a beautiful routine, making her connections, but she fell off after her back handspring/back handspring.  She finished out the routine and scored 9.000 and 8th place medal.  Her all-around score was 36.650 for a 3rd place finish in the junior b age group!!  Another great meet!!  2 very cool pieces of info from this meet -- one of the floor judges was Chelsie Memmell and one of the vault judges was Anna Li -- how cool is that!!?? Enjoy this pic collage from today!!

Sophia will be working hard in the gym over the next 4 weeks to prepare for the level 8 state meet!  She will be competing April 8-10.  When I have more information -- day, time and location, I will be sure to post it!  Thank you as always for keeping up with Sophia's gymnastics!  Videos from these 3 meets will be posted to her YouTube account soon!!
