2012 Brestyan's Invitational

Yesterday was a phenomenal day for Sophia!  She competed at the Brestyan's Invitational - which happens to be 1) a pretty big meet here in New England and 2) this is the gym she trained at when we first moved here!  Let me just say that she rocked the meet big time!!!  First up, beam!  Sophia did an awesome beam routine and received a 9.375 for a 1st place medal.  Next up - floor!  Sophia earned herself another 1st place medal with a 9.150 for her floor routine!  Then she came up to do vault!  And she nailed both of her vaults! They looked fantastic!  I will post the videos of her 2 vaults for all to see!  She walked away with a 9.500 and another 1st place medal!  Last up, bars!  Oh no, dreaded bars as the last event of the meet!  Didn't matter much to Sophia today because she pulled off another 1st place medal with a score of 9.375.  Sophia took home the 1st place trophy for the child b age group with a score of 37.400!  Sophia had the 2nd highest all-around score of the meet - slightly behind her teammate Caroline, who got a 37.425!  The Elite Gymnastics Level 5 Team took home the 1st place banner with a score of 112.300!!  What a great meet for all of the girls on the team!!  Super proud of Sophia and her teammates!!!  Sophia will not be competing in the meet next weekend in Orlando but she will be competing in the 2012 Team Challenge in Danbury, CT on February 3rd!!!  Way to go Sophia!!!

2012 Kids Celebrate Life Invitational

Today's meet was held in honor of a gymnastics judge who passed away from breast cancer.  The proceeds from the meet are being donated to charity!  When we arrived to the meet, I was given a the opportunity to write a special tribute to my grandfather and aunt Sherry on a white paper bag - both of whom passed away from cancer!  The plan from the group hosting this meet was to make the bags into luminaires (using glow necklaces) and light them all at the end of the meet!  I hope they post pictures on Facebook - I will post the link here if they do!   The team bought special leos to wear to the meet - they are black with pink trim with a breast cancer ribbon made out of crystals!  Today, Sophia's group started out on bars!  I always like her doing bars first - gets them out of the way!  Sophia scored a 8.950 for her routine!  Her casts look fantastic but she is still transitioning from doing a squat on to a pike on - she is improving every day!!  This score earned her a 2nd place medal!  Next up, beam!  Sophia rocked the beam today!!  She had a few wiggles but nothing too major and earned her a score of 9.375 for a 1st place finish!  Floor was next.  Sophia got a 9.000 on her routine!  She had a small error doing her handstand after the back extension roll - but the rest of the routine looked great!  She placed 7th in her age group for this!  Finally, Sophia moved onto vault!  It was kind of nice being able to really see her do her vaults!  Most meets have the vault far away from where the spectators sit - but today, the vault was super close!  Sophia rocked her vaults and scored 9.100 for a 1st place medal!!  Finally, we came to the all-around placements!  Sophia was in the intermediate age group and took home the 1st place trophy with a score of 36.425!!  She did great today and I am super proud of her!!  Sophia's next meet is this Friday at the Brestyan's Invitational!
